Novex News

A custom newsroom for a positive-news outlet, built around a trust model no hosted platform ships: every public submission needs photo evidence, and verified stories carry an editorial badge wired into their structured data.

Novex News: digital news platform

The challenge

Novex News publishes verified, solution-driven stories from Nigeria and beyond. Its entire proposition is trust, which is the one thing an off-the-shelf publishing platform cannot supply.

WordPress, Ghost and Substack all assume the same shape: a writer writes, a writer publishes. Novex needed something else. Public submissions from anyone, including guests with no account, gated behind mandatory photo evidence. A hard wall between reader accounts and staff accounts. An editorial verification badge that means something, and that machines can read as well as people. None of those tools ship a trust model.

The monetisation did not fit either. Novex sells its own inventory rather than handing it to a hosted platform, which is not something those platforms are built to allow.

What we built

There is no external CMS behind Novex. We built one, keeping readers and staff in genuinely separate authentication systems rather than behind a role flag on a shared account.

A submission arrives from the public, no account required, and lands in a review queue. An editor approves it with reviewer notes that are mandatory rather than optional, and promoting it creates a draft article in a single transaction. Publishing is not a button that trusts you: a pre-publish checklist runs first and refuses anything incomplete, naming exactly what is missing rather than failing quietly or shipping a half-finished story.

The stack is Next.js and React with Tailwind, TipTap for editing, Prisma over Postgres, Cloudinary for media, and GA4.

Key technical decision

Trust that machines can read

A verification badge only humans can see is a design element. Novex needed one that search engines and answer engines would honour too.

Verified articles emit NewsArticle JSON-LD with a conditional reviewedBy, so the editorial check a reader sees as a badge is the same fact a machine reads as structured data. The claim is made once, in the workflow, and surfaces in both places.

For an outlet whose whole pitch is verified reporting, the trust model has to be legible to the systems that decide what gets surfaced.

Key technical decision

A news feed with a 48-hour window

News has a different metabolism to the rest of the web. A story matters intensely for a day, then it does not.

Novex runs two sitemaps: the standard one, and a hand-rolled Google News feed with a hard 48-hour window that refreshes every five minutes, so breaking stories surface while they are still breaking.

Caching had to bend around that without going stale, so it runs in layers, and publishing a story invalidates precisely the pages that story affects rather than flushing everything and rebuilding the site. Covers are rewritten into right-sized modern formats rather than shipped at full weight.

Outcome

Novex News runs in production as a custom newsroom: public submission with evidence gating, an editorial approval chain with reviewer notes, and a publishing pipeline that refuses to ship an incomplete story.

The platform went from start to launch in three weeks.
